The University of South Carolina is set to pay tribute to one of its most iconic athletes, A’ja Wilson, by retiring her No. 22 jersey. This prestigious honor is a testament to Wilson’s outstanding contributions to the school’s women’s basketball program.
A Trailblazing Career
Wilson’s impressive journey began when she became the program’s first No. 1 recruit. She went on to make history by becoming a three-time Southeastern Conference player of the year, leading the Gamecocks to their first national title in 2017. Her incredible talent and dedication earned her the title of South Carolina’s all-time scoring leader with an impressive 2,389 points.
WNBA Success and Olympic Glory
After being drafted as the WNBA’s No. 1 pick in 2018, Wilson continued to excel in the professional league. She has won two league titles with the Las Vegas Aces and was recently named WNBA MVP for the third time, becoming only the second player to receive the award unanimously. Wilson’s success extends beyond the WNBA, as she led the U.S. team to an Olympic gold medal in Paris this past summer, marking her second Olympic title.
A Lasting Legacy
The ceremony to retire Wilson’s jersey will take place on February 2, before the No. 1 South Carolina Gamecocks face off against Auburn.
