Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga Fail to Reach New Deal
The Golden State Warriors and forward Jonathan Kuminga have been unable to come to an agreement on a new contract before the Monday deadline for rookie contract extensions. Despite months of discussions between the Warriors and Kuminga’s representative, Aaron Turner of Verus Basketball, the two parties were unable to find common ground.
Kuminga’s Growth and Expectations
Kuminga believes in his ability to develop into a star player in the league, and statistics suggest that his growth is similar to that of Kawhi Leonard, Pascal Siakam, and Jaylen Brown in their early years. However, the Warriors prefer to evaluate Kuminga’s progress over the coming season before making a long-term commitment.
Fit with Coach Steve Kerr a Concern
Warriors officials are also monitoring the fit between Kuminga and coach Steve Kerr, which could be a factor in the team’s decision-making process. Despite not reaching a new deal, the Warriors still retain Kuminga’s rights in free agency next summer.
General Manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. Weighs In
Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. emphasized that not reaching an extension agreement does not necessarily mean that Kuminga will not be with the team for a long time. “We want those guys here,” Dunleavy said, highlighting the importance of Kuminga having a strong season in his fourth year in the league.
Competition for Starting Spot
Kuminga is competing for a starting spot, which is reportedly important to him. Although he told ESPN that he has no preference between starting and coming off the bench, he admitted that it is easier for him to start. The Warriors’ recent agreement with Moses Moody on a three-year, $39 million extension may also impact Kuminga’s role on the team.
Adjusting to Small Forward Role
Kuminga’s task during the preseason has been to adjust to a small forward role, which could increase his chances of starting. Last season, he averaged 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in a career-high 26 minutes per game, starting 46 of his 74 games played.
