NBA Coach of the Year Monty Williams Trades Pro Court for Prep School Sidelines

From NBA Courts to High School Hoops: Monty Williams’ New Chapter

Monty Williams, the 2021-22 NBA Coach of the Year, is taking a break from the professional league to focus on a new challenge: coaching his sons at TMI Episcopal prep school in San Antonio. This move marks a significant shift for Williams, who has spent over two decades in the NBA as a coach and executive.

A New Opportunity Arises

TMI Episcopal announced Williams’ hiring on its Instagram account, highlighting his extensive coaching experience and welcoming him to the school community. As a parent to Elijah (class of ’26) and Micah (class of ’29), Williams will have the opportunity to be more involved in his sons’ lives while still pursuing his passion for basketball.

A Coaching Career Spanning Decades

Before joining TMI Episcopal, Williams had a storied career in the NBA. He most recently served as the head coach of the Detroit Pistons, where he was let go after one season despite having $65 million remaining on his contract. Prior to his stint in Detroit, Williams was the head coach of the Phoenix Suns, leading the team to a remarkable turnaround and earning himself the NBA Coach of the Year award in 2021-22.

A Legacy in Phoenix

Williams’ time in Phoenix was marked by significant success. During his tenure, the Suns achieved a regular-season record of 194-115 (.628) and a postseason record of 27-19, including an NBA Finals appearance in 2021. His leadership played a crucial role in revitalizing the franchise, and his legacy continues to be felt in the organization.

A New Chapter Unfolds

As Williams begins this new chapter in his coaching career, he brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge. With his sons by his side, he will have the opportunity to shape the next generation of basketball players and create lasting memories. The TMI Episcopal community is excited to welcome Williams and looks forward to seeing the impact he will make on the school’s basketball program.
