Inter Milan’s Injury Crisis Deepens Amidst Packed Schedule

Inter Milan’s Injury Woes Continue

Sunday’s Serie A match against AS Roma proved to be a bittersweet victory for Inter Milan. Despite securing a 1-0 win thanks to Lautaro Martínez’s goal, the team suffered another injury setback with two starting players forced off the field in the first half.

Çalhanoğlu and Acerbi Sidelined

Hakan Çalhanoğlu was the first to succumb to injury, requesting to be substituted just 12 minutes into the match due to discomfort in his left thigh. Fifteen minutes later, Francesco Acerbi followed suit, also exiting the game with a similar muscular injury.

Inzaghi’s Concerns

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi expressed concern over Çalhanoğlu’s condition, revealing that the player had been struggling with fitness issues in the lead-up to the match. “He wasn’t in great shape over the last two days, so with the other two available I would’ve rested him this evening,” Inzaghi told DAZN. “He is generous and tried to put in the effort, but he felt the adductor pain and stopped before it got worse.”

Martinez Makes History

The win was a testament to the team’s resilience, and Lautaro Martínez’s goal marked a significant milestone for the captain. With his 133rd goal for Inter across all competitions, Martinez matched the club’s all-time scoring record for a foreign player, previously held by Hungarian Istvan Nyers since the 1950s. Inzaghi praised Martinez, saying, “He just has to keep doing what he has done with Inter and Argentina. I think he is one of the five best players in the world. He deserves all of this success.”

A Packed Schedule

The match marked the beginning of a grueling period for Inter, with seven games scheduled over the next 21 days. The team will compete in the Italian league, Champions League, Italian Cup, and Italian Super Cup, as well as the newly expanded Club World Cup. Inter Milan president Giuseppe Marotta voiced concerns about the fixture list, saying, “We have to live with the constant stress of so many games that the players are struggling to handle… we need to safeguard their health.”
