A Win for the Ages: Illinois Takes Down Michigan
In a game that will be remembered for years to come, the Illinois Fighting Illini defeated the Michigan Wolverines 21-7 on Saturday. The win marked Illinois’ first victory against Michigan since 2009 and its first against a ranked Wolverines team since 1983.
A Personal Victory for Coach Bielema
For Illinois coach Bret Bielema, the win was more than just a notch on his belt. It was a personal victory, one that came with a mix of emotions. Bielema’s mother, Marilyn, had passed away just two days before the Illini’s last matchup against Michigan in 2022. As he spoke to his team before the game, Bielema couldn’t help but get choked up.
“This game has always had a lot of things around it that have been tugging on my heart all week,” Bielema said. “To have this moment, it’s what I came here for. I thought we could build Illinois into something that is sustainable, and this is a very big step in that direction for our fan base to have them get rewarded.”
A Team Effort
The Illini’s win was a team effort, with quarterback Luke Altmyer leading the charge. Altmyer threw for a touchdown and ran for another, and was instrumental in controlling the tempo of the game. The Illini’s defense also shined, holding Michigan to just seven points and forcing three turnovers.
“I don’t think he planned to go there, but just such a man of love and passion heart for his family, obviously, and his program, these individuals that are in this building,” Altmyer said of Bielema’s pre-game speech. “I don’t know if a lot of other people in that meeting got emotional, but I was feeling out for him and knew this meant the world to him.”
A New Chapter
The win marked a new chapter for the Illini, one that they hope will be filled with success. With a 5-1 record, Illinois is very much alive in the Big Ten race, and will look to continue their winning ways next week against No. 2 Oregon.
“Our success certainly didn’t happen because of a week of preparation,” Altmyer said. “It came from last year’s failures, it came from training throughout the offseason.”
Added linebacker Dylan Rosiek: “This has been a steady crescendo that we’re trying to keep building on.”
A Happy Ending
For Bielema, the win was a happy ending to a difficult week. As he looked out at the sea of Illini fans rushing the field, he couldn’t help but smile.
“To come full circle, I know she’s smiling right now,” he said of his mother. “There’s a lot of people that make this day happen, but to have the love and support of the people around me in this place, in this building … is really, really cool.”
