F1 Stewards Under Fire: Norris Calls for Consistency
A dramatic U.S. Grand Prix has sparked controversy, with Lando Norris questioning the consistency of F1 stewards after a penalty cost him a podium finish. The McLaren driver was relegated to fourth place after a five-second time penalty, allowing championship rival Max Verstappen to claim third.
A Questionable Decision
Norris expressed frustration with the stewards’ decision, referencing a similar incident at the Austrian Grand Prix where Verstappen went unpunished for a defensive maneuver that forced Norris off the track. “He gained an advantage by going off the track, and I had to do the same,” Norris said. “It’s impossible for people to know if I could have made it on the track or not.”
Inconsistency in the Spotlight
The Briton pointed out the inconsistency in the stewards’ decisions, citing the Austrian Grand Prix as an example. “The rules seem to change, and it’s tough to understand what’s allowed and what’s not.” Norris believes that the stewards need to be more consistent in their application of penalties to ensure fairness in the sport.
A Blow to Norris’ Title Hopes
The penalty dealt a significant blow to Norris’ title aspirations, leaving him 57 points behind Verstappen with just five races and two sprints remaining. “It’s a momentum killer,” Norris admitted. “I didn’t beat the one guy I needed to beat today, so it was an unsuccessful weekend all in all.”
Lessons to Learn
Despite his disappointment, Norris acknowledged that he and his team have work to do to improve their performance. “We gave it a good shot, but it wasn’t good enough. I have work to do on myself, and we need to learn from our mistakes to come back stronger.”
