Florida State Football: A Season of Struggle and Perseverance
The 2024 college football season has not been kind to the Florida State Seminoles. With a dismal 1-6 record, the team’s preseason goals have all but evaporated. Despite this, head coach Mike Norvell remains committed to finding solutions to the team’s woes.
A Million Problems, But Only One Solution
Norvell acknowledges that there have been mistakes in evaluating this year’s team, but he’s not dwelling on the shortcomings. Instead, he’s focused on finding answers. “A million people can figure out there’s a problem, but ultimately it’s about the solutions,” Norvell told ESPN. “It’s what are you doing to fix it and make it better.”
The Road to Recovery
The Seminoles’ struggles began with a loss to Georgia Tech in Ireland, followed by another conference loss to Boston College. The team’s early struggles, combined with the lingering disappointment from last year’s playoff snub, have taken a toll on the players’ emotions. Norvell admits that his team hasn’t handled the challenges well, leading to a mental block that has prevented them from playing to their potential.
A Glimmer of Hope
Despite the setbacks, Norvell sees reason for optimism. True freshman Luke Kromenhoek showed promise against Duke, coming on after Brock Glenn and leading the offense on two scoring drives. The defense also played its best game of the year against the Blue Devils, giving Norvell hope that the team is not giving up on the season.
Rivalry Week
This week, the Seminoles face rival Miami, the No. 6 team in the country, as a 21-point underdog. Norvell gushes over Miami’s early success, led by quarterback Cam Ward, but he’s challenged his players to play their best football of the year. “I know our record is not anything that anybody’s excited about,” Norvell said, “but we have an opportunity to go play this one, and for us, it’s going to be the best of who we are and we’re going to do everything we can to be victorious in this game.”
The Future is Bright
Despite the struggles, Norvell believes in the program’s future. He sees the work the players are putting in and is confident that they will take a great step forward this week. “I definitely believe in where this program is going to go,” Norvell said. “I believe with the work our guys are pouring into it — I’m hoping to see that great step this week.”
