Redemption on the Horizon for Clayton Oliver and Melbourne
After a tumultuous AFL season, Clayton Oliver is determined to make amends and lead Melbourne back to success in 2025. Despite a potential trade to Geelong falling through, Oliver remains committed to the Demons and is eager to start preparations under coach Simon Goodwin.
A Fresh Start
Oliver’s 2024 season was marred by injuries and off-field issues, resulting in his lowest disposals average since his debut season in 2016. However, with his injuries now behind him, he is confident about his prospects for the upcoming season. “I’m alright now,” Oliver said. “I got my hand fixed up, I got a metal plate taken out. My knee is all good. I had a couple of broken ribs. I’m all fixed up.”
Melbourne’s Chances of Success
The Demons slid dramatically last season, missing the top eight after consecutive straight-sets finals exits. However, with two top-10 draft picks at their disposal, they are poised to climb back up the ladder. Oliver believes that if he and fellow flag-winning star Christian Petracca can return to their best form, Melbourne will be a force to be reckoned with. “We were there a couple of years ago,” Oliver said. “We fell short 2022 and 2023, last year we had Gussy (Angus) Brayshaw retire, Trac (Christian Petracca) got injured, I had a stinker of a year, Maysy (Steven May) was a little bit off.”
Pre-Season Preparations
Oliver plans to report early for duty on November 11 with the Demons’ younger players, signaling his commitment to getting back to his best. With six years left on his lucrative contract, he is determined to make the most of his time at Melbourne. “I’m keen to get back (to training),” Oliver said. “Melbourne are looking good. We will have a big year (in 2025).”
