Josh King Appointed as New Head Coach of South East Melbourne Phoenix

New Era for South East Melbourne Phoenix

In a move to revitalize their season, the South East Melbourne Phoenix has appointed Josh King as their new head coach, sources have confirmed. King’s arrival marks a significant change for the team, which had a dismal start to the 2024-25 NBL season with a 0-5 record.

A Fresh Perspective

The American coach brings a wealth of experience to the table, having most recently led Darüşşafaka in the Turkish Basketball Super League. Although his tenure was brief, lasting only four months, King is eager to make a lasting impact with the Phoenix. His decision to leave Darüşşafaka and join the Phoenix underscores his commitment to the team’s success.

Interim Coach Steps Aside

Sam Mackinnon, who took over as interim head coach for one game, will be replaced by King. Mackinnon’s brief stint yielded a 93-84 win over Melbourne United, but the team still faces an uphill battle to turn their season around.

King’s Coaching Pedigree

Before joining Darüşşafaka, King was at the helm of MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg in the Basketball Bundesliga. His coaching career began in the college ranks, where he served as an assistant for UMass Lowell, Marshall University, and the University of New Hampshire. This diverse experience has prepared King for the challenges he will face with the Phoenix.

A Long-Term Commitment

The plan is for King to sign a multi-year deal with the Phoenix, indicating that the team is invested in his vision for the future. At just 39 years old, King has the potential to lead the Phoenix for years to come, bringing stability and consistency to the franchise. With King at the helm, the South East Melbourne Phoenix is poised for a new era of success.
