Venables Considers Redshirt for OU QB Jackson Arnold

Quarterback Conundrum: Oklahoma’s Dilemma

As the Oklahoma Sooners prepare to face South Carolina on Saturday, the spotlight remains fixed on their quarterback situation. Coach Brent Venables has confirmed discussions with sophomore quarterback Jackson Arnold about potentially taking a redshirt, but Arnold will remain an option under center for the remainder of the regular season.

A Team-First Approach

Venables emphasized the importance of considering Arnold’s feelings and needs, stating, “What was told to Jackson is if we put you in, it’s because we need you to help us go win. We’re certainly sensitive to everything.” This approach highlights the value Venables places on teamwork and camaraderie within the Sooners’ ranks.

The Road to Redemption

Arnold’s benching after committing three turnovers in the first half of the Tennessee game on September 21 sparked concerns about his future. However, Venables praised Arnold’s response, saying, “Jackson’s been fantastic all things considered. He’s taken it in a really tough-minded way. And he’s ready to play.” This resilience demonstrates Arnold’s commitment to the team and his own growth.

Giving Hawkins a Fair Shot

Meanwhile, freshman Michael Hawkins Jr. will continue as the starting quarterback, with Venables emphasizing the need to give him a fair opportunity to prove himself. “I feel that it’s only right to give Mike the opportunity to be the quarterback and to have a body of work that says he either is or isn’t the right guy,” Venables explained. Hawkins has shown promise, completing 63.4% of his passes and adding 118 yards on the ground.

The Redshirt Option

With Arnold having appeared in four games this fall, the possibility of burning his redshirt looms large. However, Venables remains open to exploring this option, stating, “We’re not sitting here with our head in the sand or naive to what it is.” As the Sooners navigate their remaining six regular season games, the fate of Arnold’s redshirt hangs in the balance.

Saturday’s Showdown

As Oklahoma takes on South Carolina, all eyes will be on Hawkins as he leads the Sooners under center. With the team struggling to find consistency, this matchup presents a crucial opportunity for Hawkins to prove himself and for the Sooners to regain momentum. Will they rise to the challenge?
