Saints Suffer Devastating Blow: Rashid Shaheed Out for the Season
New Orleans Saints fans were dealt a crushing blow on Thursday when the team announced that wide receiver and kick returner Rashid Shaheed would be sidelined for the remainder of the season. The news comes after Shaheed underwent knee surgery in Los Angeles to repair a meniscus injury, which is expected to take four to six months to recover from.
A Critical Loss for the Saints
Shaheed’s absence will be deeply felt, particularly in the wake of Chris Olave’s concussion, which has left the Saints without their top two receivers. Shaheed had been a standout performer, leading the league with an impressive 15.9 yards per punt return and returning a punt for a touchdown just last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
A Season of Setbacks
Unfortunately, Shaheed is not the only significant Saints player to be placed on injured reserve recently. Starting center Erik McCoy underwent groin surgery and is projected to miss six to eight weeks, while safety Will Harris was also recently placed on IR with a hamstring injury. The Saints have been plagued by injuries, with a string of other players missing time, including quarterback Derek Carr, guard Cesar Ruiz, tight end Taysom Hill, and linebacker Pete Werner.
Looking Ahead
The Saints (2-4) will face off against the Denver Broncos and former New Orleans coach Sean Payton on Thursday night, without Shaheed and Olave. Despite the setbacks, the team will need to dig deep and find a way to overcome their injuries if they hope to turn their season around. Shaheed’s one-year, $5.2 million extension, signed in July, means he will be under contract through the 2025 season, providing a glimmer of hope for the future.
