Perth Glory Eyes A-League Finals Berth: Taggart

A New Era Unfolds: Perth Glory Aims for Redemption

After a dismal 2023-24 campaign, Perth Glory is gearing up for a fresh start under new coach David Zdrilic and a revamped squad. Captain Adam Taggart is confident that his team can defy expectations and become the A-League’s surprise package this season.

Shaking Off the Past

Last season’s woeful performance saw Perth Glory collect the wooden spoon, with a paltry five wins and seven draws from 27 matches. The team’s defense was in shambles, conceding a league-high 69 goals, including a crushing 8-0 loss to Melbourne City and a 7-1 defeat to Sydney FC. The aftermath saw coach Alen Stajcic’s departure, paving the way for Zdrilic’s arrival.

New Blood, New Ambition

With new owners and a new coach at the helm, Taggart believes the team can turn over a new leaf. “It’s a fresh start, and that gives us a sense of optimism,” he said at the season launch. “We can be a surprise package this year, using all the new faces and energy to push this club forward.” Taggart has set his sights high, targeting a top-six finish as the absolute minimum.

Rebuilding from Scratch

The squad has undergone a significant overhaul during the off-season, with familiar faces Josh Risdon and Brandon O’Neill returning to their hometown club. Newcomers have also been brought in, replacing departed players like Daniel Bennie, Aleksandar Susnjar, Stefan Colakovski, and Josh Rawlins.

Coach Zdrilic’s Vision

Zdrilic is undaunted by the challenges ahead, emphasizing his team’s aggressive mindset. “We want to win every game, home and away,” he said. “It’s a new culture, a new entity – we’re not looking back.” With a clean slate, Perth Glory is poised to rewrite their fortunes.

The Season Ahead

Perth Glory kicks off their campaign away to Macarthur FC on Sunday, marking the beginning of a new era. Can they defy the odds and make a push for the top six? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – Taggart and Zdrilic are ready to lead the charge.
