Chelsea Manager Calls for Goal-Line Technology in Women’s Super League
Following a 5-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor has questioned the lack of use of goal-line technology in the women’s game. The issue arose when a ‘ghost goal’ from Tottenham’s Amanda Nildén was allowed to stand, despite Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton insisting that the ball did not cross the line.
A Case for Technology
Bompastor believes that implementing technology in the women’s game is crucial to supporting referees with decision-making. “I just think in this type of situation, we just need to help the referees,” she said. “If the technology is there for the men’s game, why don’t we have the same?” The Chelsea manager emphasized that the use of technology would not only aid referees but also enhance the overall professionalism of the women’s game.
Cost a Major Factor
The main obstacle to implementing goal-line technology in the Women’s Super League is cost. Many teams host their fixtures at non-league grounds where the technology is not readily available, and several clubs have expressed concerns about the added expense. However, Bompastor argues that if the women’s game wants to be taken seriously, it needs to invest in the same technology as the men’s game.
Tottenham Manager Echoes Bompastor’s Sentiments
Tottenham Hotspur manager Robert Vilahamn agrees with Bompastor, stating that goal-line technology would be a welcome addition to the women’s game. “VAR or goal-line technology, if we can get it right and not lose the momentum of the game, bring it right in,” he said. Vilahamn believes that the technology would lead to quicker decisions and fewer disputes.
Chelsea Maintain Perfect Record
Despite the controversy surrounding the ‘ghost goal,’ Chelsea went on to secure a 5-2 win over Tottenham. The Blues head into the international break with four wins in as many games, sitting second in the WSL table. Tottenham, on the other hand, have only picked up a win and a draw so far, leaving them in eighth place.
