Broncos’ Slow Starts: The Bo Nix Conundrum

Broncos’ Offense Stuck in Neutral: Can They Find a Solution?

The Denver Broncos’ offense has been stuck in a rut, and it’s costing them games. Despite a 3-3 record, their opening acts have been disastrous, failing to create momentum before halftime in all but one game. Coach Sean Payton’s carefully selected “openers” haven’t performed well, and the team’s inability to protect the ball and find consistency has led to a dismal first-half performance.

A Tale of Two Halves

In their Week 3 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Broncos scored two touchdowns and hit two field goals through six first-half possessions. However, in their five other games, they’ve accumulated 20 punts, two interceptions, two lost fumbles, and 15 three-and-outs over 30 first-half possessions. The defense has stolen victories, but the offense can’t seem to find its rhythm.

Nix’s Comfort Zone

Rookie starter Bo Nix has shown promise, but he’s more comfortable with the smaller menu of plays in two-minute or hurry-up situations. This has worked when defenses have dialed back to protect multi-score leads, but not when defenses are sticking to their game plans early. Payton acknowledges that Nix is more effective in up-tempo situations, but the team needs to find a way to make it work when the game is still in the balance.

Statistical Struggles

The Broncos rank 30th in first-half scoring, averaging 5.8 points per game before halftime. They’re also 31st in yards per play (3.7) and last in offensive EPA (minus-43.8) in the first half. In the second half, they’re tied for 15th at 11.0 points per game, but it’s too little, too late.

Finding a Solution

Payton and the Broncos know they need to improve their first-half performance. They’ve shown flashes of what’s necessary to succeed, but turnovers, penalties, and missed opportunities can’t continue to hurt them. The team needs to find a way to protect the ball, execute plays, and convert on third downs. With a quick turnaround before their Thursday night showdown against the New Orleans Saints, the Broncos must find answers fast.
