Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface was involved in a car accident on Sunday morning, just hours after scoring the winning goal in his team’s 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.
The Incident
According to German media reports, Boniface was a passenger in a Mercedes en route to Frankfurt airport when the driver lost control of the vehicle due to fatigue and collided with a truck. The 23-year-old Nigeria international suffered minor hand injuries and was taken to hospital.
Boniface’s Reaction
In a since-deleted post on Instagram, Boniface shared pictures and a video of the smashed car, as well as a photo of his hand covered in blood. He later wrote on X, “God is the greatest.” A club source told Reuters that Boniface was doing well after the incident.
Investigation Underway
The Hessen state police website reported that the accident occurred on Sunday morning and an investigation is underway. Leverkusen and Boniface’s management agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
Impact on Leverkusen’s Season
The incident comes at a crucial time for Leverkusen, who are fourth in the Bundesliga standings with 14 points from seven games. They face French side Brest in the Champions League on Wednesday. Despite the setback, Boniface has been in excellent form this season, scoring seven goals in 10 appearances for Leverkusen across all competitions.
