Friendship on Hold: Mayfield Jokes About Andrews’ Pre-Game Silence
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is gearing up for a thrilling matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football, but it seems his friendship with Ravens tight end Mark Andrews has taken a temporary backseat.
Mayfield and Andrews have a rich history, having played together for three seasons at the University of Oklahoma. In fact, they were teammates when Mayfield won the prestigious Heisman Trophy in 2017, and Andrews took home the John Mackey Award as the best tight end in college football. Today, they have adjacent plaques commemorating their achievements at the Barry Switzer Center in Norman, Oklahoma.
A Seasonal Hiatus from Friendship
Despite their strong bond, Mayfield joked that Andrews has gone radio silent on him during the season. “He’s a weirdo,” Mayfield said with a chuckle. “He can’t separate friendship and football, so we have these few months where we’re not exactly friends.” Mayfield added that Andrews struggles to balance their friendship with the competitive nature of the game.
No Texts, No Calls
Mayfield even poked fun at Andrews’ lack of response to his texts. “It hurts my feelings,” he said, eliciting laughter from the room full of reporters. The quarterback also reminisced about Andrews’ participation in his bachelor party, where they went Sasquatch hunting together. “He was going to be the bait,” Mayfield recalled.
Love Has Changed Him
Mayfield believes Andrews’ new romance with social media ambassador Elena Yates has altered his personality. “Some people think he’s gone soft,” Mayfield said with a straight face. “I’m not one of those people, but there are whispers out there.” When asked if Andrews had started watching romantic movies like “The Notebook,” Mayfield quipped, “He’s watched it on repeat for the last six months. Love you, Mark.”
As the Buccaneers prepare to face off against the Ravens, it’s clear that Mayfield and Andrews will put their friendship on hold – at least until the final whistle blows.
