Shakeup in the WNBA: Dallas Wings Fire Coach Latricia Trammell
The Dallas Wings have parted ways with head coach Latricia Trammell, marking the fourth coaching change in the WNBA since the 2024 regular season came to a close. This move comes on the heels of departures from Curt Miller of Los Angeles, Tanisha Wright of Atlanta, and Teresa Weatherspoon of Chicago.
A Season of Ups and Downs
Trammell’s tenure with the Wings was marked by both triumph and struggle. In her first season, she led the team to a 22-18 record, the franchise’s best since 2008. The Wings even advanced to the WNBA semifinals, where they ultimately fell to the Las Vegas Aces. However, this year’s campaign was marred by injuries and absences, including star forward Satou Sabally’s 25-game hiatus due to a shoulder injury and her Olympic commitments.
New Leadership on the Horizon
The Wings’ president and CEO, Greg Bibb, has announced plans to hire a general manager to oversee the team’s basketball operations. This new role will be responsible for leading the search for Trammell’s replacement. “As part of our year-end review process, we’re committed to strengthening our basketball operations through the hiring of a general manager,” Bibb explained. The search for this key position is already underway.
Looking Ahead to the Future
The Wings face a critical offseason, with the 2025 WNBA draft lottery set for November 17 and the Golden State Valkyries’ expansion draft on December 6. The team must also prepare for its eventual move to downtown Dallas, which will include a new practice facility and the renovated Dallas Memorial Coliseum. According to Bibb, these investments will position the Wings for long-term success both on and off the court.
A Franchise in Transition
The Wings’ franchise has undergone significant changes since its inception in Detroit in 1998. The team won three WNBA championships before relocating to Tulsa in 2010 and eventually settling in Dallas in 2016. Now, as they embark on a new chapter, the Wings will be hiring their fifth coach since making the move to Texas.
