Fill-in Coach Leads Women’s Golf Team to Championship Glory

Unlikely Hero Steps Up to Lead Charleston Southern to Victory

In a shocking turn of events, Charleston Southern’s women’s golf team found themselves without a coach just weeks before a crucial tournament. The sudden departure of their head coach, Chan Metts, left the team scrambling to find a replacement. That’s when Michael Causey, the assistant athletic director for athletic communications, stepped up to the plate.

A Golf Novice Takes the Reins

Causey, a sports information director by trade, had no formal golf experience. His only claim to golf fame was winning an annual employee mini-golf tournament at a local ice cream shop. Yet, he saw an opportunity to give the team some much-needed attention and support.

Relying on Team Leaders

Causey’s first move was to turn to the team’s veteran players for guidance. He downloaded WhatsApp to join the team’s group chat and let the experienced players take the lead. Every detail, from meal planning to course arrival times, was handled by the squad’s leaders.

A Player-Centric Approach

Causey’s role was more about providing encouragement and support than offering technical golf advice. He drove the team van, set up scorecards, and even delivered mid-competition snacks. His goal was to be a calming presence, offering words of encouragement and tasty treats.

Snacks and Smiles

The team responded well to Causey’s approach. With his snack cart in tow, he became a welcome sight on the course. Players appreciated his upbeat attitude, which helped to alleviate any pressure or stress.

Championship Performance

The team’s hard work and Causey’s support paid off. Charleston Southern dominated the Elon Invitational, finishing with a one-stroke lead after the second round. Although the final round was canceled due to weather, the Buccaneers were declared champions.

An Unlikely Champion

As the team celebrated their victory, Causey was quick to deflect attention to the players. However, the team made sure he shared in the limelight, thanking him for his invaluable support.

“We’re really grateful to have had Michael with us,” said senior Odette Font. “He was truly amazing. We couldn’t have asked for better.”
