Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025: The Stage is Set
The wait is over! The draw for the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup has finally taken place, and the groups are set to thrill. Host nation England, alongside powerhouses Australia and the United States, will face off in a highly anticipated pool stage. Meanwhile, six-time champions New Zealand will clash with Ireland in a mouth-watering encounter.
A New Era for Women’s Rugby
This year’s tournament marks a significant milestone in the growth of women’s rugby. For the first time, 16 teams will compete, up from 12 in the 2021 edition. The “big four” – England, New Zealand, Canada, and France – have been seeded first in their respective pools, reflecting their dominance in the sport.
England’s Quest for Glory
England, boasting an impressive 50-win streak, will be looking to make a strong impression. Alongside Australia and the United States, they’ll also face Samoa in their group. With their recent form, they’re expected to advance comfortably to the knockout stages.
New Zealand’s Tough Test
New Zealand, however, will need to be at the top of their game as they take on Ireland, who recently stunned them in the WXV. Japan and Spain complete the pool, making it a highly competitive group. The Black Ferns will be eager to prove their mettle and silence their critics.
Canada and France Eye Semifinal Spots
Canada, runners-up in 2014, will face Scotland, Wales, and Fiji in their pool. Meanwhile, France, seeking to break their semifinal curse, will clash with Italy, South Africa, and debutants Brazil.
The Road to Twickenham
The tournament will be held across eight venues from August 22 to September 27. The opening game takes place at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light, with six locations hosting pool matches. Exeter and Bristol will stage the quarterfinals, before the semifinals and final take center stage at Twickenham. A sell-out crowd of 82,000 is expected for the final, which would be a record for a women’s international match.
