Tua Tagovailoa’s Return to the Field: A Waiting Game
Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel has expressed optimism about quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s return to the field this season. Although there is no exact date set for his comeback, McDaniel believes Tagovailoa will play again in 2024.
A History of Concussions
Tagovailoa has been dealing with concussions since entering the league in 2020. He was diagnosed with two concussions during the 2022 season and suffered a third hit to the head that led to changes in the NFL’s concussion reporting policy. After being diagnosed with a concussion on December 26, 2022, the Dolphins shut him down for the remainder of the season.
The Road to Recovery
McDaniel did not spend time contemplating whether Tagovailoa would ever play again. Instead, he focused on the quarterback’s well-being and the best course of action for his recovery. “I think the biggest thing that I’ve learned, for me as a head coach, it’s absolutely imperative for me to control the controllables,” McDaniel said.
A New Quarterback in Town
In Tagovailoa’s absence, the Dolphins have started two quarterbacks: Skylar Thompson and Tyler Huntley. The team plans to continue starting Huntley until Tagovailoa’s return. McDaniel said the team’s Week 6 bye allowed Huntley to “really jump into” the finer points of the Dolphins’ complex offense.
Injury Updates
Beyond Tagovailoa, McDaniel was noncommittal on any Dolphins player currently on injured reserve returning to action this week. Linebacker Bradley Chubb is not expected to practice or play this week, while running back De’Von Achane’s status remains in question after suffering a concussion in Week 5. Safety Jevon Holland’s status is also unclear after breaking his hand in Week 5.
Looking Ahead
The Dolphins face the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, and McDaniel is focused on preparing his team for the challenge ahead. While Tagovailoa’s return is uncertain, one thing is clear: the Dolphins are eager to get their star quarterback back on the field.
