England’s Nations League Campaign Back on Track
Following a disappointing 2-1 home loss to Greece, England bounced back with a 3-1 victory over Finland on Sunday. The win marked a significant turnaround for the team, and stand-in manager Lee Carsley was thrilled with the response.
A New Era for English Football?
Carsley, who has managed England’s Under-21s since 2021, took over as interim boss for the senior side after Gareth Southgate stepped down. Despite his success in the role, Carsley remains tight-lipped about his job aspirations. “This job deserves a world-class coach who has won trophies, and I am still on the path to that,” he said.
Player Praise for Carsley
Midfielder Declan Rice praised Carsley’s approach, saying it had been “refreshing” to play under him. “He’s been so honest, so upfront, just says to go out and play with freedom, and I think you can see us lads, we’re playing really well out there and, yeah, really enjoying our time under him.” Jack Grealish, who scored his fourth England goal under Carsley, echoed Rice’s sentiments, calling the stand-in boss “top, top manager.”
A Focus on the Present
Carsley’s remit as interim manager is six games, and he’s determined to focus on the present rather than speculating about his future. “I keep saying the same thing. My remit was six games, and I’m happy with that,” he said. “This is a privileged position. I’m really enjoying it, but I didn’t enjoy the last two days. I’m not used to losing in an England team, I don’t take losing well.”
A Positive Outlook
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the England manager position, the team’s players are focused on the positives. As Grealish noted, “Whatever happens with the England manager, people will always say negative stuff… I love coming here, a top, top manager and I love playing for him.” With their Nations League campaign back on track, England looks set to continue their upward trajectory under Carsley’s guidance.
