Carlton Superstar Commits to Long-Term Deal
In a major boost for the Carlton Football Club, co-vice-captain Jacob Weitering has signed a six-year contract extension, solidifying his commitment to the team until at least 2031. The 26-year-old defender, widely regarded as one of the best in the AFL, had a year remaining on his existing contract but was eager to re-sign and continue building with the Blues.
A Star Defender’s Rise to Prominence
Weitering, the No.1 draft pick in 2015, has established himself as a dominant force in the competition. A dual Carlton best-and-fairest winner, he has consistently impressed with his lockdown defending skills, averaging over 5.5 spoils per game. In recent seasons, he has expanded his game, recording more marks and intercepts than any other player in the 2023 season. His outstanding form earned him a maiden All-Australian blazer this year.
Loyalty and Commitment
Weitering’s decision to re-sign with the Blues reflects his confidence in the club’s direction and stability. “Carlton made a significant investment in me in 2015, and I couldn’t imagine playing football anywhere else,” he said. “I have always wanted to be a one-club player, and I feel like I have grown up alongside my teammates in my nine years here.” His commitment to the team is a testament to his loyalty and dedication.
A Bright Future Ahead
Carlton’s head of list management, Nick Austin, expressed his delight at Weitering’s decision to extend his contract. “He is one of the most respected defenders in the competition, and to see him extend with still a year on his contract shows the type of loyal person he is,” Austin said. With Weitering on board, the Blues are well-positioned for success in the coming years.
