Quarterback Conundrum: Steelers Weigh Options

The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing a dilemma at the quarterback position, with both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson vying for the starting spot against the New York Jets on Sunday. Fields, who has led the team to a 4-2 record in his six starts, acknowledges that he hasn’t been good enough, citing areas for improvement.

A Critical Self-Assessment

“I don’t think I played good enough, if I’m being real with you,” Fields said. “If I’m being real with myself, I think if I did play well enough, I don’t think there would be any sort of who should be playing, who should not.” Despite his wins, Fields recognizes that the Steelers’ offense ranks 28th in passing and 20th in points per game.

A Different Perspective

Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, however, disagrees with Fields’ assessment. “I think sometimes some guys are too hard on themselves,” Smith said. “You appreciate it about him. That’s why he works so hard, and nobody wants to be a martyr…” Smith believes that Fields’ mental toughness is what sets him apart from other quarterbacks.

A Change in the Air

Coach Mike Tomlin has hinted that Wilson may start on Sunday, now that he’s healthy from a lingering calf injury. Wilson took first-team reps in practice, leading the quarterback rotation in individual drills. This could mean a shift in the Steelers’ offense, with Wilson’s ability to stretch the field with the deep ball.

The Mobility Factor

However, the Steelers would also lose Fields’ mobility component, which has been a valuable asset in situational football. Smith acknowledges the tradeoff, saying, “They’re at completely different points of career and I’d argue different players… You just pivot and you lean into something else and that’s what you do.”

Fields’ Focus

Regardless of his role on Sunday, Fields remains focused on his preparation and approach. “I’m just doing the same thing I was doing,” he said. “I just do my job at the end of the day, whether that’s playing, helping the guys out on the sideline, telling them what I see, helping Russ out if he’s out there.”

A Praise for Smith

Fields also praised Smith, who has helped him reduce turnovers and improve as a quarterback. “He just pushed me every day to get better as a quarterback, developmental wise,” Fields said. “Really just a person, too. I love Arthur.”

The Emotional Component

Smith recognizes the emotional impact of a quarterback change on Fields’ confidence. “You look at everything… When you become callous to it or numb, you probably should get out of this thing, but I think [Fields] confidence should be high.”

The Season Ahead

Though his role may be reduced on Sunday, Fields remains optimistic about his contribution to the team throughout the season. “I think you just never know what happens… It’s a long season and life is crazy in general, so you just never know.”
