Tensions Run High in Georgia’s Victory Over Mississippi State
In a heated moment during the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game, Georgia coach Kirby Smart was seen shoving Mississippi State quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. out of bounds. The incident occurred with 2:55 left in the game, after Van Buren was pushed out of bounds by Georgia safety Dan Jackson at the end of a 6-yard run.
A Misdirected Outburst?
Smart claimed he was trying to get the attention of defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann, not intentionally making contact with Van Buren. “I think I was going after Schumann,” Smart explained in a post-game interview. “We were trying to change personnel, and I was trying to get his attention.” However, Van Buren had inadvertently run into Smart’s path, leading to the brief altercation.
A Brush-Off from Van Buren
Van Buren, who completed 20 of 37 passes for 306 yards with three touchdowns and one interception, seemed unfazed by the incident. “I’m not really sure what that was, but I was just trying to play my game,” he said. “I didn’t really see it for real.”
Lebby Declines Comment
Mississippi State coach Jeff Lebby chose not to comment on the incident, stating he hadn’t seen what happened. The Bulldogs ultimately emerged victorious, securing a 41-31 win over the visiting team.
A Fiery Display from Smart
While Smart’s actions may have been misdirected, they underscore the intense emotions that can arise during high-stakes games. As the coach took off his visor and yelled at someone on Georgia’s sideline, it was clear that passions were running high. Despite the brief controversy, the game continued without major incident, and Georgia celebrated its hard-won victory.
