Sabalenka Makes History with Third Consecutive Wuhan Open Title
Top-ranked tennis player Aryna Sabalenka has cemented her dominance in the sport, claiming her third consecutive Wuhan Open title. The 26-year-old Belarusian defeated home favorite Zheng Qinwen in a thrilling three-set match, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
A Commanding Performance
Sabalenka’s victory was marked by impressive stats, including seven aces and 32 winners. She also demonstrated exceptional control, not facing a single break point in the opening set. This commanding performance has earned her the top spot for most aces in WTA 1000 this season, surpassing world No. 5 Elena Rybakina.
A Brief Blip
Despite having won all three of their past meetings in straight sets, Sabalenka encountered some resistance in the second set against Zheng. The Paris Olympics gold medalist managed to take the set 7-5, forcing Sabalenka to regroup and refocus.
Sealing the Win
In the deciding set, Sabalenka came out strong, racing to a 3-0 double-break lead. She eventually converted her third championship point to seal her fourth title of the year and take her overall WTA singles title haul to 17.
A Historic Achievement
Sabalenka’s victory makes her the first player to win the Wuhan Open three consecutive times. “That sounds crazy,” she said of her achievement. “This place definitely feels like home.” With this win, Sabalenka is targeting to reclaim the top ranking in the final weeks of the season, having already qualified for the season-ending WTA Finals along with world No. 1 Iga Swiatek.
