Women’s Hockey Takes Center Stage: Players Snag Lucrative Deals at Inaugural HIL Auction
The much-anticipated Hockey India League (HIL) auction for the women’s competition has finally come to a close, and the results are nothing short of astonishing. Udita, the Indian star, emerged as the most expensive buy, fetching a whopping 32 lakh from Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers. Not far behind was Dutch sensation Yibbi Jansen, who was snapped up by Odisha Warriors for 29 lakh.
Indian Talent Shines Bright
Several Indian players made headlines with their impressive deals. Lalremsiami was acquired by Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers for 25 lakh, while Sunelita Toppo and Sangita Kumari were picked up by Delhi SG Pipers for 24 lakh and 22 lakh, respectively. These talented athletes have proven their worth, and their franchises are eager to see them in action.
Current Core Group Players Find New Homes
Salima Tete and Savita, both part of the current Indian women’s hockey core group, were bought by Soorma Hockey Club for 20 lakh each. Delhi SG Pipers also made a significant purchase, acquiring Navneet Kaur for 19 lakh. These players bring a wealth of experience and skill to their new teams.
Overseas Players Make Their Mark
The auction also saw several notable overseas players join the fray. Belgium’s Charlotte Englebert and Germany’s Charlotte Stapenhorst were both picked up by Soorma Hockey Club for 16 lakh each. Australia’s Jocelyn Bartram, meanwhile, was acquired by Odisha Warriors for 15 lakh. These international stars are set to bring a new level of competition to the league.
Unsold Players Get a Second Chance
In a heartening move, Hockey India approved a request from unsold players of the Indian senior women’s and junior women’s teams to reduce their base price to 2 lakh. This allowed players like Madhuri Kindo, Jyoti Chhatri, Deepika Soreng, and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal to secure their place in the inaugural edition of the Women’s HIL. Their determination and perseverance have paid off, and they’re ready to make their mark.
