A New Chapter Unfolds: Gregg Berhalter Takes the Helm at Chicago Fire
After a tumultuous summer, former U.S. men’s national team coach Gregg Berhalter is ready to turn the page. Introduced as the new head coach and director of football for the Chicago Fire, Berhalter is eager to awaken the “sleeping giant” that is the Fire.
Reflections on a Difficult Moment
Berhalter’s firing in August was a tough pill to swallow. “It’s like mourning a death,” he reflected. “Your confidence takes a hit, and it’s a really difficult moment.” However, he didn’t let the setback define him. Instead, he took time to reflect on what went wrong and how he could improve.
Seeking Feedback and Growth
Berhalter solicited feedback from the USMNT players, analyzed their responses, and identified areas for improvement. This process reignited his passion and motivation. “You get hungry again,” he said. “And during that period, I kept coming back to Chicago and the potential and the alignment.”
A New Era at Chicago Fire
Berhalter’s alignment with Fire owner Joe Mansueto is built on a shared vision of creating a top-performing club in Major League Soccer. The team’s new training facility, flexibility in rebuilding the roster, and plans for a soccer-specific stadium all contribute to an exciting future.
Mansueto’s Vision
Mansueto explained that the search for a new director of football began in August, when Georg Heitz notified him of his intention to return to Europe. With preseason approaching, Mansueto acted quickly, whittling down an initial list of 80 candidates to three. Berhalter’s track record and impressive interview sealed the deal.
A Seamless Connection
Mansueto initially didn’t intend to have one person fill both roles, but Berhalter’s experience convinced him otherwise. “From my perspective, what I wanted to do is create an environment where people can do their best work,” Mansueto said. “If he can do his best work as director of football and head coach, there’s this seamless connection.”
A Shared Vision for Success
Berhalter and Mansueto are aligned on their goals for the Fire. “It’s really about creating an established top-performing club in Major League Soccer and having the consistency throughout the time that we’re here,” Berhalter said. With their combined expertise and passion, the future looks bright for the Chicago Fire.
