Rugby League’s Biggest Names in the Spotlight
As the Pacific Championships heat up, attention turns to the NRL’s top talent, and none more so than St George Illawarra captain Ben Hunt. With his contract up for grabs in 2026, the 34-year-old halfback has become the hottest property on the market.
A Move Back to Queensland on the Cards?
Hunt has long been considering a return to his home state to finish his career, but the Dragons have previously blocked his requests for a release. However, with negotiations set to take place over the coming weeks, things could change. The Dolphins, led by incoming coach Kristian Woolf, would be interested in signing a player of Hunt’s caliber, but Woolf insists that contacting Hunt is not a priority at present.
The Dolphins’ Halfback Conundrum
With only Isaiya Katoa and Kodi Nikorima contracted beyond next season, the Dolphins are on the hunt for top talent. Woolf praises Katoa, who has blossomed into one of the league’s outstanding young playmakers since their time together during Tonga’s 2022 World Cup campaign. “I love what Isaiya Katoa brings. He’s an outstanding halfback and he’s a guy that I think is going to be an elite halfback in the NRL,” Woolf said.
The Dragons’ Dilemma
If Hunt were to depart, the Dragons would be left with a significant amount of funds to pursue a replacement. With quality playmakers like Sam Walker, Daly Cherry-Evans, Braydon Trindall, and Brad Schneider entering the final season of their contracts, the Dragons would have plenty of options to choose from.
The Future of Rugby League
As the NRL season approaches, one thing is clear: the league’s top talent is in high demand. With coaches and teams vying for the best players, the coming weeks will be crucial in shaping the future of rugby league. Will Hunt make a move back to Queensland? Only time will tell.
