African Players Shine Bright in Week 6 of the NFL Season
The Cleveland Browns may have suffered a disappointing loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6, but one player stood out from the crowd – Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, the Ghanaian descendant who proved to be a game-changer. Despite the Browns’ defeat, Owusu-Koramoah’s outstanding performance earned him the title of African Player of the Week.
Owusu-Koramoah: The Game-Changer
The linebacker was a force to be reckoned with, making eight tackles and one sack, while also tipping a pass. His sack was particularly crucial, as it led to Myles Garrett blocking the ensuing Eagles field goal attempt, and Rodney McLeod Jr. running in for the touchdown. Had the Browns won, Owusu-Koramoah’s sack would have undoubtedly been the Moment of the Week.
Amen Ogbongbemiga: The Sack Master
However, Owusu-Koramoah wasn’t the only African player to make waves in Week 6. Lagos-born Amen Ogbongbemiga, playing for the Chicago Bears, picked up a memorable sack on Mac Jones, and then celebrated with a nod to Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic ‘Siuuu’ gesture. The Bears went on to win 35-16 against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London, giving Ogbongbemiga a moment to cherish.
Honorable Mentions
Several other African players made significant contributions to their teams in Week 6. Liberian-born Sam Okuayinonu picked up a sack for the San Francisco 49ers, while Malik Mustapha, of Nigerian descent, got an interception. Alvin Kamara, born in Atlanta to a Liberian mother, scored a touchdown for the New Orleans Saints, and Paulson Adebo, of Beninese descent, made a memorable interception and ran the ball back well.
African-Born Players Making a Difference
Azeez Ojulari, a son of Nigerian immigrants, got two sacks for the New York Giants, despite their loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Yannick Ngakoue, of Cameroonian descent, got a sack, and Nnamdi Madubuike, of Nigerian descent, half a sack in the Baltimore Ravens’ win over the Washington Commanders. Esezi Otomewo, another Nigerian-born player, notched half a sack and a fumble reception in the Jaguars’ defeat to the Bears.
Nate Landman: A Zimbabwean Star
Nate Landman, born in Zimbabwe, had a strong game with eight tackles and two forced fumbles for the Atlanta Falcons in their 38-20 win over the Carolina Panthers. After being sidelined with quad and calf injuries, Landman proved he can play a critical role in the Falcons’ push to reach the playoffs.
