New Era Dawns for Arsenal Women
The sudden departure of Jonas Eidevall sent shockwaves through the Arsenal women’s team, but forward Alessia Russo believes the squad’s strong leadership core will help them navigate these turbulent times.
Regrouping After a Rocky Patch
Eidevall’s resignation on Tuesday came on the heels of a disappointing string of performances, capped off by a 5-2 thrashing to Bayern Munich in the Women’s Champions League and a loss at home to Chelsea in the Women’s Super League. However, under the guidance of interim boss Renée Slegers, the team showed remarkable resilience, comprehensively beating Valerenga 4-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Players Take Charge
Russo credited the team’s many leaders for helping to regroup and refocus the squad. “We’ve got a dressing room full of players that want to get better and want to keep pushing,” she said. A players’ meeting organized on Tuesday played a significant role in their win, with Russo emphasizing the importance of teamwork and high standards. “We as players have really high standards, and we know that the results haven’t been as good as we know we can be.”
Experienced Hands Steer the Ship
The presence of three international captains – Leah Williamson, Lia Wälti, and Katie McCabe – along with seasoned players like Kim Little and Mariona Caldentey, has undoubtedly helped the squad stay united during this period of uncertainty. Russo, who scored Arsenal’s fourth goal against Valerenga, acknowledged the pressure the team has faced, but emphasized the importance of focusing on their game and performance.
Learning from Adversity
Russo’s own difficult start to the season has been emblematic of Arsenal’s struggles in front of goal. However, her goal against Valerenga marked a turning point, and she’s determined to use the experience to grow stronger. “It’s tough, obviously… You’ve just got to listen to your people, listen to your teammates, your staff, and focus on your game and your performance.” With the team’s leaders at the helm, Arsenal women are poised to emerge from this challenging period stronger and more united than ever.
