Utah Utes Suffer Major Blow as Quarterback Cam Rising Sidelined for the Season
In a devastating turn of events, Utah quarterback Cam Rising has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2024 season due to a severe lower leg injury. The news was confirmed by coach Kyle Whittingham on Monday, leaving the Utes reeling from the loss of their star player.
Rising’s Injury Woes Continue
The seventh-year senior suffered the injury during Utah’s 27-19 loss to Arizona State on Friday, when his leg was bent backward at an awkward angle following a hit on the Utes’ first drive. Despite struggling with mobility and accuracy, Rising finished the contest, but his performance was far from impressive. He completed only 43% of his passes and threw three interceptions against the Sun Devils.
A Season of Setbacks
This is not the first time Rising has faced injury woes. He missed three games earlier this season due to an injury to his throwing hand, and sat out the entire 2023 season after suffering a major knee injury in the 2023 Rose Bowl.
New Quarterback on the Block
With Rising out, true freshman Isaac Wilson will take the reins as the Utes’ starter until further notice. Wilson, the younger brother of Denver Broncos quarterback Zach Wilson, has already shown promise, posting a 2-1 record as a starter while throwing for 726 yards and five touchdowns with five interceptions during Rising’s earlier absence.
Coach Whittingham’s Verdict
“We feel like the quarterback position is stable. We just don’t have Cam,” Whittingham said at his weekly news conference Monday. While Rising’s absence will undoubtedly be felt, Whittingham remains optimistic about the team’s prospects. An eighth season for Rising may even be considered if he decides to seek a medical waiver after this season.
