The Unstoppable Freddie Freeman
The Los Angeles Dodgers’ first baseman, Freddie Freeman, is a force to be reckoned with on the field. Despite suffering a severe ankle sprain that should have kept him out for six weeks, Freeman returned in just over a week and played a crucial role in the Dodgers’ victory over the San Diego Padres in the division series.
A Modern-Day Iron Man
Freeman has built a reputation as a modern-day iron man, playing in 99% of his games over the last five years. He achieves this by mastering the aspects within his control, such as his routine and preparation. However, the 2024 season has been a challenging one for Freeman, with fluky injuries and family trauma testing his resolve.
Finding a Way
Despite the setbacks, Freeman has continually found a way to contribute to the team. In October, he hobbled towards a .353 batting average through the first six games of the playoffs, inspiring his teammates with his indomitable will. “When you see him, you know he’s got broken bones all over the place and he can barely walk, and he’s out there making plays, stealing bases – they just don’t make them like him anymore,” said Dodgers second baseman Gavin Lux.
No Time Off
It’s not in Freeman’s nature to take time off. He adheres to the mantra of playing every day, no matter how hurt he might be. This philosophy was ingrained in him by his father, who watched his wife lose her life to melanoma and still summoned the strength to show up to work every single day.
A Challenging Year
The 2024 season has been a challenging one for Freeman. His 3-year-old son, Max, was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, and Freeman spent nine days away from the team caring for him. When he returned, he suffered a nondisplaced fracture of his right middle finger and later landed awkwardly on his right foot, putting his season in jeopardy.
Recovery and Inspiration
Freeman’s recovery hasn’t followed a linear path. The more he plays, the more sore his right ankle becomes. However, he continues to inspire his teammates with his determination and resilience. “He’s sacrificing health to find a way to be on the field,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “And then when you sacrifice anything, it makes what you’re sacrificing for more important.”
The Dodgers’ Gain
The Dodgers are gaining strength from Freeman’s unwavering commitment. He’s a leader on the field, and his presence in the lineup is crucial to the team’s success. As the Dodgers face
