Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers: Cameroon and Algeria Secure Spots
The road to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco is heating up, with Cameroon and Algeria becoming the latest teams to book their places. Both teams secured crucial victories in qualifying matches on Monday, bringing the total number of qualified teams to four.
Cameroon Edges Out Kenya
In a closely contested match, Cameroon defeated Kenya 1-0 thanks to a stunning free kick from Boris Enow. The goal, scored from just outside the box, was enough to secure the win for Cameroon, who dominated the game despite the absence of their federation president Samuel Eto’o. This victory takes Cameroon to 10 points from four games, ensuring they cannot finish outside the top two in their pool.
Algeria Overcomes Togo
Meanwhile, Algeria continued their impressive form with a 1-0 win over Togo. Ramy Bensebaini converted a penalty in the first half to give Algeria the lead, but they had to withstand significant pressure from their hosts. Despite Togo creating several chances, Algeria held on to secure the win and maintain their perfect record with 12 points from four games.
Other Qualifying Matches
In other qualifying matches, Zimbabwe moved into a strong position in their pool with a 3-1 win over Namibia. Walter Musona scored a brace, including a penalty, to go with a strike from Prince Dube. Equatorial Guinea also secured a crucial win, defeating Liberia 2-1 thanks to a late winner from Dorian Hanza. Gambia, meanwhile, edged out Madagascar 1-0, with Musa Barrow scoring the decisive goal after earlier missing a penalty.
Current Standings
With these results, Cameroon and Algeria join hosts Morocco and Burkina Faso as the four teams confirmed for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals. Zimbabwe, Equatorial Guinea, and Gambia are all well-placed in their respective pools, with several teams still vying for the remaining spots. The qualifying matches will continue next month, with teams battling it out for a place in the prestigious tournament.
