NFL Icon Tom Brady Set to Become Minority Owner of Las Vegas Raiders
In a move that’s been months in the making, legendary quarterback Tom Brady is poised to become a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders. According to league sources, the NFL’s finance committee has reviewed and approved Brady’s bid, paving the way for a vote by the league’s owners at their upcoming fall meeting in Atlanta.
A Done Deal?
While the vote is still pending, insiders suggest that it’s all but a formality. The finance committee’s unanimous approval of Brady’s bid is a strong indication that the deal will go through, with one source noting that it’s rare for owners to vote against a unanimous recommendation from the committee.
Brady’s New Venture
As part of the agreement, Brady will purchase approximately 10% of the Raiders, alongside businessman Tom Wagner, from owner Mark Davis. The deal was initially agreed upon in May 2023 but required refinements after the league’s financial committee deemed the initial offer too discounted.
A New Era for the Raiders
Raiders owner Mark Davis expressed excitement about Brady joining the team, stating, “We’re excited for Tom to join the Raiders… He will be just the third player in the history of the National Football League to become an owner.” Brady will join an elite group of former athletes who have become owners, including Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Mario Lemieux.
From Quarterback to Owner
Brady’s transition from quarterback to owner marks a new chapter in his illustrious career. After retiring from football in 2023, he began working as an analyst for Fox, where he signed a 10-year, $375 million contract. Now, at 47, he’s set to become one of the highest-profile former athletes to own a piece of a team.
A Growing Trend
Brady’s move into ownership is part of a growing trend of former athletes investing in sports teams. Other notable examples include Dwyane Wade, Alex Rodriguez, Patrick Mahomes, and Lewis Hamilton, who have all purchased stakes in various teams across the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL.
