Colts Coach Provides Update on Quarterback Anthony Richardson’s Status
Indianapolis Colts coach Shane Steichen has announced that quarterback Anthony Richardson is expected to return to the starting lineup for the team’s Week 7 game against the Miami Dolphins.
Richardson, who has been sidelined for the past two games with an oblique injury, has made significant progress in his recovery. However, Steichen opted to keep him out of Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans as a precautionary measure.
A Cautious Approach
“I wanted to make sure he was 100%,” Steichen explained. “That’s what went into the decision. He’s really close. That’s why we had him as our third/emergency quarterback. But he should be looking really good this week.”
Steichen’s cautious approach with Richardson is due in part to the quarterback’s position and the fact that he will touch the ball on every play. “It’s case by case and, obviously, Anthony will touch the ball on every single play and it’s a long season,” he said.
Veteran Backup Joe Flacco Fills In
In Richardson’s absence, veteran backup Joe Flacco has filled in admirably, throwing for 359 yards in a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5 and guiding the Colts to a win over the Titans on Sunday. However, Steichen has made it clear that Richardson is the team’s starting quarterback when healthy.
Richardson’s Return Expected Soon
Richardson, who has missed 13 games as a rookie in 2023 and has started four of six games this season, told ESPN that he is “still healing” from the injury and concurs with the decision to keep him out of Sunday’s game. With Steichen’s announcement, it appears that Richardson’s return to the starting lineup is imminent.
