Racing Prodigy Hailie Deegan Shifts Gears to IndyCar
In a surprise move, 23-year-old racing sensation Hailie Deegan announced her departure from NASCAR to join the Indy NXT Series with HMD Motorsports. This new chapter in her career marks a significant shift from stock cars to open-wheel racing.
A New Challenge Ahead
Deegan will pilot the No. 38 entry for the entire 14-race calendar, competing alongside a talented team of drivers including Caio Collet, Josh Pierson, Tommy Smith, and Bryce Aron. With no prior experience in open-wheel racing, Deegan is eager to learn and tap into the expertise of her new team.
“I’m thrilled about this opportunity and look forward to working with a proven program like HMD Motorsports,” Deegan said. “I have a lot to learn, but I’m ready to put in the work. The team’s wealth of knowledge will be invaluable as I prepare for my debut next March in St. Petersburg.”
From NASCAR to IndyCar
Deegan spent the last four years competing in NASCAR’s Truck Series and Xfinity Series, making her debut at just 18 years old. Although she has yet to win at the national level, her experience and determination will undoubtedly serve her well in this new endeavor.
Preparation is Key
To prepare for the transition, Deegan and HMD Motorsports will conduct test sessions at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week. She will work closely with Nathan Toney, former HMD Motorsports engineer and owner of Toney Driver Development. Additionally, Deegan has already completed test sessions at various circuits and will gain her first open-wheel race experience later this month in the Formula Regional Americas season finale at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.
A Warm Welcome
“Hailie, and especially the Deegan name, are huge in motorsports, and we welcome them to the HMD Motorsports family,” team president Mike Maurini said. “Hailie has already shown her commitment to this new chapter in her career, and we’re excited to support her every step of the way.”
