Bears’ Cole Kmet Steps Up in Emergency Role
LONDON – In a surprising turn of events, Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet found himself thrust into the role of emergency long-snapper during Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. With regular long-snapper Scott Daly ruled out due to a knee injury, Kmet stepped up to fill the void.
A Nightmare Scenario Becomes Reality
Kmet, who had briefly practiced long-snapping on Thursdays, was suddenly faced with the daunting task of snapping for the Bears’ special teams unit. “It was my biggest nightmare come true,” Kmet recalled. Despite his initial hesitation, Kmet rose to the challenge, snapping for five extra points, including two after hauling in touchdowns.
A Hidden Talent Revealed
As it turns out, Kmet had experience long-snapping in high school, where he would often practice with his dad and brother in their backyard. This hidden talent proved invaluable on Sunday, as Kmet’s snaps helped the Bears secure a 35-16 victory over the Jaguars.
Cairo Santos Praises Kmet’s Performance
Bears kicker Cairo Santos was impressed by Kmet’s performance, saying, “Cole did a heck of a job. Special teams player of the week.” Santos went on to praise Kmet’s ability to step up in an emergency situation, noting that the Jaguars were “rushing really hard” on extra points.
A Breakout Game for Caleb Williams
Meanwhile, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams had a standout performance, throwing four touchdown passes and completing 23 of 29 attempts for 226 yards. His 79% completion percentage was the third-highest by a rookie with four passing touchdowns in a game in NFL history.
A Pair of Touchdowns for Cole Kmet
Kmet also had a notable game, hauling in two touchdowns and becoming the first Bears tight end to do so since 2019. His performance, combined with that of wide receiver Keenan Allen, marked the first time two Bears teammates had each scored two receiving touchdowns in the same game since 1970.
The Bears’ Offense Finds Its Rhythm
After a slow start to the season, the Bears’ offense has finally found its rhythm, scoring at least 35 points in back-to-back wins over Carolina and Jacksonville. With their Week 7 bye approaching, the team is feeling confident and momentum is building.
A Team Effort
As wide receiver Keenan Allen noted, “As long as everybody is complementing each other, special teams playing good, we’ve got a chance.” The Bears’ recent success is a testament to the team’s ability to work together and support one another, both on and off the field.
