Nigeria v Libya: Sabotage Claims Spice Up AFCON Qualifier

AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS QUALIFYING: NIGERIA AND LIBYA ENGAGED IN HEATED DISPUTE

A contentious issue has emerged in the lead-up to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match between Nigeria and Libya. The Nigerian team’s aircraft, initially scheduled to land in Benghazi, was diverted to a different airport, sparking accusations of travel sabotage.

NIGERIA CLAIMS DIVERSION WAS UNPROVOKED

According to Nigerian team spokesman Promise Efoghe, the plane was redirected to an airport 240 kilometers east of Benghazi without explanation. This development has led to tensions between the two teams, with Libyan authorities remaining tight-lipped on the matter.

LIBYAN CAPTAIN DEMANDS RECIPROCITY

Meanwhile, Libya captain Faisal Al-Badri has alleged that his team was mistreated during their visit to Nigeria for the first leg of the qualifying series. Al-Badri claims that the Libyans were subjected to lengthy delays and searches, which he believes warrant reciprocal treatment for the Nigerian team.

NFF DISPUTES LIBYAN CLAIMS

However, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has disputed Al-Badri’s allegations, stating that the Libyans were responsible for their own logistical issues. NFF Director of Protocol Emmanuel Ayabunmi maintains that the Libyans failed to provide adequate notice of their arrival, leading to disruptions in the reception arrangements.

MATCHDAY TENSIONS

The controversy has spilled over into the match itself, with both teams engaging in time-wasting tactics during the first leg. The Nigerian team eventually secured a 1-0 victory, but not before the referee added only four minutes of stoppage time, leaving the Libyans incensed.

NIGERIAN COACH REMAINS FOCUSED

Despite the off-field distractions, Nigerian coach Austin Eguavoen remains committed to securing qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations. Eguavoen has called on his players to maintain their focus and composure, emphasizing the importance of achieving their goal.

CHALLENGES AHEAD

The Nigerian team faces an uphill task in the second leg, particularly given their recent away record in qualifying matches. However, Eguavoen is confident in his team’s ability to navigate the challenges of African football and emerge victorious.

CRUCIAL MATCH AHEAD

The return leg in Libya promises to be a high-stakes encounter, with the Nigerians seeking to seal qualification and the Libyans aiming to salvage their campaign. A win for either side would significantly boost their chances of advancing to the Africa Cup of Nations.
