Rodman’s Return on the Horizon
The Washington Spirit is set to receive a significant boost with the impending return of star forward Trinity Rodman. After being sidelined with a back injury since September 20, Rodman is expected to make her comeback when the Spirit hosts Racing Louisville in the NWSL on Sunday.
A Much-Needed Boost
Rodman’s absence has been deeply felt by the Spirit, who have struggled without their leading scorer. In her eight games this season, Rodman has netted eight goals, tying her for fourth in the NWSL alongside teammate Ouleymata Sarr and Brazilian legend Marta. Her six assists also rank her third in the league, making her a strong contender for the 2024 NWSL MVP award.
Coach Giráldez Cautiously Optimistic
While coach Jonatan Giráldez is hesitant to confirm Rodman’s return, he expressed optimism about her progress. “As always, I don’t want to say 100% because we have to train tomorrow,” Giráldez told reporters on Friday. “One training session is left, and I want to confirm that 100% tomorrow.” He added that Rodman, along with defender Casey Krueger and forward Chloe Ricketts, are all in contention to make their returns.
A Welcome Return for the USWNT Star
Rodman’s return will be a welcome relief for the Spirit, who have struggled without her firepower. The 22-year-old has been an integral part of the USWNT, appearing in every game since the start of 2023. She was a key player in the team’s Olympic gold medal run last month, scoring three goals, including the extra-time winner against Japan in the quarterfinals.
The Spirit Looks to Bounce Back
After a disappointing 2-0 loss to the Orlando Pride last week, the Spirit will be looking to bounce back with Rodman’s return. The team will need to regroup and refocus as they push for a strong finish to the season. With Rodman back on the field, the Spirit will undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned with in the NWSL.
