Fighting Racism: A Top Priority for Nico Williams

Spanish football star Nico Williams has spoken out about his personal mission to combat racism, both on and off the pitch. In a recent interview with El Mundo, the 22-year-old forward emphasized the importance of using his public platform to raise awareness and promote change.

A Personal Connection to the Cause

As a black player born in Spain to Ghanaian parents, Williams has experienced racist abuse firsthand in LaLiga. He and his brother, Iñaki Williams, also a professional footballer, have made it their mission to fight against racism. “It’s my number one goal,” Nico Williams stated. “As a public figure, I have a responsibility to contribute to this fight and not let myself be sidetracked or become a distraction.”

Racism in Spanish Football: A Persistent Problem

Unfortunately, racism remains a recurring issue in Spanish football. Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior has been repeatedly targeted by opposing fans since his arrival in the country in 2018. Williams acknowledged the problem, saying, “In football, there are too many insults. I don’t like it when they insult others, whether it’s Vinícius or Luka Modric. You should be able to enjoy the game and support your team without needing to insult anyone.”

Progress and Commitment

Despite the challenges, Williams believes that Spain is moving in the right direction. LaLiga and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have both committed to the fight against racism, and recent actions have shown progress. A Mallorca fan was recently handed a 12-month suspended sentence for racially insulting Vinícius and Villarreal’s Samuel Chukwueze. Williams noted, “I think that Spain is moving forward on the right path, and we must continue like this.”

A Multicultural Role Model

Williams sees himself as an example of a multicultural Spain, and he is proud to be a role model for young people from diverse backgrounds. “It’s essential to make everyone aware that many people come to Spain to earn their bread, to try to achieve a future that they don’t have in their countries, and to give a better life to their children,” he said. “My family did that journey, and I’m going to try to do everything in my power so that these people can have a better life.”
