Breaking Records in the NWSL
A new milestone has been achieved in the National Women’s Soccer League. Temwa Chawinga, a forward for the Kansas City Current, has shattered the record for most goals scored in a single season. Her impressive feat came during Saturday’s match against Bay FC.
A Stunning Strike
Chawinga’s record-breaking goal was a masterpiece. In the 35th minute of the game, she unleashed a powerful strike from distance that left the opposing team’s goalkeeper with no chance. This remarkable goal marked her 19th of the season, surpassing the previous record set by Sam Kerr in 2019.
A New Talent in the NWSL
Chawinga’s achievement is all the more impressive considering it’s her first season in the NWSL. The Malawi international joined the league in the offseason, having previously played in the Chinese Women’s Super League. Her older sister, Tabitha, recently signed with Lyon, demonstrating the family’s strong soccer pedigree.
Comparing Achievements
While Chawinga has broken Kerr’s single-season record, Kerr remains the NWSL leader in regular-season goals with 77 over seven seasons. Notably, neither Kerr nor Chawinga scored any of their goals from the penalty spot. Chawinga’s 19th goal came in her 24th game of the season, whereas Kerr scored 18 goals in 21 regular-season matches in 2019.
A Bright Future Ahead
Temwa Chawinga’s record-breaking achievement is a testament to her exceptional talent and dedication. As she continues to make waves in the NWSL, fans can expect exciting things from this rising star.
