Seattle Kraken Locks In Netminder Joey Daccord with Lucrative Five-Year Deal
In a move that solidifies their crease for the foreseeable future, the Seattle Kraken has inked goaltender Joey Daccord to a five-year contract extension worth a substantial $5 million annually. This new pact ensures Daccord’s services through the 2028-29 season, quashing any speculation about his impending unrestricted free agency.
Daccord’s remarkable ascension from a projected third-string goalie to a bonafide starter has been nothing short of remarkable. Injuries and inconsistency from other Kraken netminders created an opportunity for Daccord to seize the reins, and he responded with a breakout 2023-24 campaign. His impressive stats – 19 wins, 2.46 goals-against average, and.916 save percentage – were instrumental in propelling the Kraken into playoff contention, albeit briefly.
This contract comes on the heels of a flurry of goalie deals around the league. The Boston Bruins recently locked in Jeremy Swayman with an eight-year, $8.25 million annual contract, while the Ottawa Senators inked Linus Ullmark to a four-year, $8.25 million deal. The market is clearly trending upward, with New York Rangers star Igor Shesterkin poised to reset the bar when he signs his next contract.
With Daccord and Philipp Grubauer forming a formidable tandem, the Kraken can now focus on bolstering their roster in other areas. Notably, Grubauer’s contract expires after the 2026-27 season, giving the team ample time to reassess their goaltending landscape. As it stands, the Kraken will dedicate 12% of their salary cap space to their netminders, the fourth-highest allocation in the league for the 2025-26 season.
