In a surprising move, the New York Yankees opted to start Jon Berti at first base in Game 2 of the American League Division Series against the Kansas City Royals on Monday night, following Anthony Rizzo’s injury. This marked Berti’s professional debut at the position.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed confidence in Berti’s abilities, citing his natural infielder skills and impressive performance in spring training. Although Berti’s experience at first base is limited, Boone believes he’s the right fit for the job.
Rizzo, who suffered a pair of fractured fingers, was replaced by Oswaldo Cabrera in Game 1, who put on a stellar defensive display despite going 1 for 4 with three strikeouts. Rookie Ben Rice, another option on the Yankees roster, was also considered for the position.
Berti’s selection was influenced by his.259 batting average against left-handers this season, compared to Cabrera’s.190 and Rice’s.135. Boone plans to mix and match his players at first base, depending on the situation.
In other news, Clarke Schmidt will start Game 3 against the Royals, ahead of Luis Gil. Schmidt, a 28-year-old right-hander, boasts a 2.85 ERA in 16 starts and is looking forward to the opportunity. Boone believes Schmidt is the right choice for the game, but expects Gil to return to the rotation if the Yankees advance to the League Championship Series.
