Renowned tennis icon Billie Jean King has been selected to lead the 136th Rose Parade as grand marshal, set to take place on January 1st. The 80-year-old trailblazer, who will celebrate her 81st birthday next month, was introduced amidst a festive atmosphere at Tournament House, accompanied by the iconic tune “Philadelphia Freedom,” penned by Elton John in her honor.
King, beaming with enthusiasm, declared, “I’m still going strong!” As she prepares to ride the 5.5-mile route through Pasadena’s streets, she reflected on her childhood in Long Beach, where she and her mother would eagerly anticipate the annual parade. The theme of “Best Day Ever!” resonated deeply with King, who believes it serves as a poignant reminder to cherish life’s precious moments.
Throughout her illustrious career, King has accumulated an impressive 39 major championships, including 20 Wimbledon titles in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Her tireless advocacy for gender equity, LGBTQIA+ rights, and social justice has earned her a revered place in American history. King joins an esteemed group of athletes who have served as grand marshals, including Olympic champions and sports legends.
Notably, King is the first female athlete to hold the position solo, underscoring her trailblazing spirit. Her recent honors include a bronze statue at Cal State Los Angeles, where she attended from 1961 to 1964, and the Congressional Gold Medal, recognizing her unwavering commitment to equal rights. King’s ownership interests in the Los Angeles Dodgers and Angel City FC women’s pro soccer team further demonstrate her enduring impact on the sports world.
