In a stunning turnaround, 23-year-old utility player Brad Schneider has gone from facing an uncertain future in the NRL to being on the cusp of winning a premiership ring with the Penrith Panthers. Just 18 months ago, Schneider was given a week’s notice to leave his life behind and join the Super League, a move that could have spelled the end of his NRL dreams.
Fast forward to the present, and Schneider is now poised to make a significant impact off the bench in Sunday’s grand final against Melbourne. With doubts surrounding Nathan Cleary’s fitness, Schneider’s role could prove pivotal in securing the Panthers’ victory. The young player’s journey is a testament to his perseverance and determination.
Schneider’s career was once on an upward trajectory, having captained his school to a national title and being touted as a future star halfback for Canberra. However, by mid-2023, it became clear that he was no longer in the Raiders’ plans. A chance opportunity with Hull Kingston Rovers in England proved to be a lifeline, and Schneider seized it with both hands.
The move to England was a whirlwind experience, with Schneider admitting that he had never been outside of Australia before. Despite the initial culture shock, he quickly found his footing, playing 12 matches and even kicking match-winning field goals in his first two games. His impressive form caught the attention of Penrith, who signed him soon after.
Schneider has since proven to be a valuable asset for the Panthers, deputising for Cleary and Luai during their absences. He credits coach Ivan Cleary for his development, saying, “It’s pretty cool having been on that side of the world and then to be part of a grand final team is pretty crazy.”
With the grand final just around the corner, Schneider is drawing inspiration from last year’s hero, Jack Cogger, who made a crucial impact off the bench. Schneider knows that he needs to be ready for anything, and his journey from uncertainty to grand final contender is a true rags-to-riches story.
