In a move aimed at shoring up their struggling defense, the Baltimore Ravens have brought in a seasoned veteran to lend a hand. Dean Pees, a longtime defensive coordinator with a wealth of experience, has been hired as a senior adviser to help first-year defensive coordinator Zach Orr.
Pees, 75, has a rich history with the Ravens, having served as their defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2017. During his tenure, he coached Orr, who was then a player, for three seasons. The Ravens are hoping that Pees’ expertise will help turn around a defense that has been struggling this season.
Under Orr’s leadership, the Ravens have been plagued by poor performance, ranking 26th in points allowed (25.2) and 31st in pass defense (280.2). This season’s start is the second-worst in franchise history, with only the 2015 team allowing more points in the first five weeks.
In stark contrast, last year’s Ravens defense was a powerhouse, becoming the first team in NFL history to record the fewest points allowed (16.5), most sacks (60), and most takeaways (31) in a single season. However, defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald’s departure to become the Seattle Seahawks’ head coach has left a void that Pees is expected to help fill.
Pees, who announced his retirement in 2017, has remained active in the NFL, serving as defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans (2018-19) and Atlanta Falcons (2021-22). His addition to the Ravens’ staff comes at a crucial time, as they prepare to face the high-powered Washington Commanders, who lead the league in scoring with an average of 31 points per game.
