In a surprise move, the New England Patriots are shaking up their quarterback lineup, with rookie sensation Drake Maye set to take the reins as the team’s new starter. According to sources, Maye, the third overall pick in the 2024 draft, will replace veteran Jacoby Brissett as the Patriots prepare to face off against the Houston Texans on Sunday.
Maye’s promotion marks a significant milestone, as he becomes the seventh Patriots quarterback to make his first career start since 2000, and only the third to do so in his rookie season. Historically, the Patriots have fared well in such situations, boasting a 5-1 record in the previous six instances.
The team’s decision to bench Brissett comes on the heels of a four-game losing streak, during which the Patriots have struggled to find consistency on offense. Despite Brissett’s admirable efforts to navigate the team’s challenges, including playing behind a revolving door of offensive line combinations and throwing to a receiving corps that ranks last in the NFL in catches and receiving yards, the Patriots have averaged a paltry 12.4 points per game.
First-year head coach Jerod Mayo had hinted at the possibility of a quarterback change, citing the need for improved performance at the position. With Maye’s development progressing behind the scenes, Mayo has apparently seen enough to give the rookie a shot.
Maye will join an elite group of rookie quarterbacks who have started games this season, including Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Bo Nix. As the Patriots look to turn their season around, all eyes will be on Maye to see if he can provide the spark they so desperately need.
