The San Francisco 49ers have tapped veteran kicker Matthew Wright to fill the void left by Jake Moody, who will be sidelined with a high ankle sprain for Thursday’s matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. Moody suffered the injury during Sunday’s nail-biting 24-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, when he attempted to make a tackle on a kickoff return.
As the 49ers worked out several kickers, including Randy Bullock, Riley Patterson, Anders Carlson, and Matt Coghlin, they ultimately settled on Wright, who boasts an impressive resume with stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, and Carolina Panthers. Throughout his career, Wright has demonstrated remarkable accuracy, converting 40 of 47 field goal attempts and 35 of 37 extra points.
Moody’s injury occurred when he was attempting to make a tackle on Cardinals returner DeeJay Dallas, who had broken through the initial line of defense. As Moody tried to bring him down, he was knocked backward, folding over his right leg in the process. The 49ers’ coaching staff was quick to recognize the severity of the injury, which will keep Moody out of commission for at least Thursday’s game.
