In a breakthrough development, authorities in North Carolina have apprehended a 20-year-old suspect in connection with the tragic shooting death of former Clemson University football star Diondre Overton. The arrest was made in Michigan, where Jeremiah Diago Blanks is currently being detained pending extradition to face first-degree murder charges.
According to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, Blanks is alleged to have fatally shot Overton during a social gathering in the victim’s hometown of Greensboro last month. Sheriff Danny H. Rogers credited the collaborative efforts of his department and the U.S. Marshals Service for the successful apprehension of the suspect.
While details regarding Blanks’ background and potential motives remain scarce, authorities have confirmed that Overton, 26, succumbed to his injuries at the scene after responding deputies found him on the morning of September 7. The incident occurred amidst reports of a loud party.
Overton’s storied collegiate career with Clemson spanned from 2016 to 2019, during which he contributed to two national championship titles. His impressive stats include 52 receptions, 777 yards, and seven touchdowns.
The news of Overton’s passing sent shockwaves through the Clemson community, with coach Dabo Swinney paying heartfelt tribute to the fallen player during the team’s entrance to the stadium just hours later. “He was an extraordinary young man, always spirited and kind-hearted,” Swinney recalled. “A true team player who left an indelible mark on our program.”
