In the midst of a dismal 1-4 start, the Cleveland Browns are standing firm behind their quarterback, Deshaun Watson, despite a struggling offense that has yet to breach the 300-yard mark in a single game this season.
Following a disheartening 34-13 defeat to the Washington Commanders, Coach Kevin Stefanski reaffirmed his commitment to Watson, stating, “We’re not making a change at quarterback. We need to elevate our performance, and I need to coach better.”
The Browns’ anemic offense managed a paltry 212 total yards, converting a mere 1 of 13 third-down attempts. Watson, who was sacked seven times, completed 15 of 28 passes for 125 yards and a single touchdown before being replaced by backup Jameis Winston in the final drive. This season, Watson has posted a 60.2% completion rate, 852 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions, accompanied by a league-low 23.9 total QBR.
Watson acknowledged the weight of responsibility, saying, “The offense’s success hinges on my performance. As the quarterback, I absorb the pressure, the heat, and the blame. It’s my job to find ways to bring everyone together, identify our mistakes, and eliminate them to get us out of difficult situations.”
The Browns’ current five-game streak of scoring under 20 points is their longest since 1999. Despite this, Coach Stefanski remains resolute, refusing to consider drastic changes, including relinquishing his playcalling duties. “This isn’t a one-man problem on offense,” Stefanski emphasized. “We have the talent, the coaches, and we’ll get it fixed.”
